EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – Feb. 12, 2003 – Over the past year, most businesses tightened their purse strings and gave less to charity. But Affinity was a beacon of light, donating computers and furniture to area schools to help students learn through technology.

The company recently donated 15 computers to Jewel City High School, a school for “at-risk” students in the Glendale Unified School District, to establish the school's first computer lab.

Affinity’s donation to Jewel City High School included CPUs and monitors and Microsoft outfitted the computers with Windows XP. Affinity also arranged for a private donation of keyboards, mice, updated memory and a laser printer to fully equip the units for student use.

Affinity’s philanthropic efforts didn’t stop in Glendale – the company also donated $50,000 worth of office furniture to L.A. City College to furnish a campus computer lab.

“I was shocked to learn that the Jewel City students had only one computer and that the school was unable to obtain funding for a larger computer lab,” Jim Collins, COO, Affinity, said. “Many of these kids have had difficult lives and are looking to re-enter mainstream high school or attain their diplomas through G.E.D. testing, so it was a pleasure for Affinity to help out and show students that there is a bright future in education and technology. We also saw a big need at L.A. City College and wanted to reach into our pocket to help.” Jewel City faculty will use the computers to establish the first computer lab at the facility. They hope to help students learn how to use technology by utilizing computers in their daily assignments. Using the new computers, students in English classes will have the opportunity to sharpen their creative writing skills, while math instructors will use computer programs to give the students a break from common workbook mathematics.
